The Gateway Trust’s mission is to create a gateway of knowledge between developed and developing countries – particularly those with Arabic-speaking and predominantly Muslim populations. You are a reader in a developed country looking to learn about the people, cultures, faiths, history, politics and societies of the developing world. Naturally, you turn to the print media and your local bookstore. What do you find? Books and articles written mostly by writers based in Western countries; often dominated by accounts of wars, natural disasters, cultural stereotypes and threats from terrorism. On the other hand, you might be a reader from a developing country, keen to get an inside-track on the people, ideas, trends and debates that are shaping the modern developed world. But your choices, too, are limited because few books from leading thinkers, writers and practitioners ever get to be translated in your country or region. This is where The Gateway Trust comes in. We look for writers of non-fiction who have yet to be heard in English. These will be individuals with fresh, innovative perspectives on current affairs and history, environment, science and technology. We do not provide funds for direct translations. But we do assist with contacts and advice on publication, promotion and international distribution. |
